I thought it might be interesting and useful to get a list of applications people find useful/essential going.

I'll kick the ball off with a few I think are worth having, I'll add more as I think/find them.

Portable Apps (http://portableapps.com/) - This is a collection of application which can be installed on a USB drive. It includes browsers, email, word processor, putty(ssh), games etc. The nice thing is that your history and documents are all kept local to the USB drive and nothing touches in PC. Handy say for work PC's :)

SpaceMonger (http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php) - A graphical view of the space usage on a drive. Dead handy for figuring out fast where all that space went to. A newer 2.1 version which is shareware is also available, but I prefer free one linked above.

uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/) - I guess everyone has their own favourite bit torrent client, this is mine; nice and small footprint, but lots a features.

TorrentFlux (http://www.torrentflux.com/) - For those of use with a spare machine or two this is a dead handy torrent client that runs via apache/php/mysql and python. Allowing you to remotely via a web browser to queue/process bit-torrent downloads along with integrated search function using the main torrent clients.

Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) - The friendly face of Linux (based off debian) very useful when combined with torrentflux for example. The server version will run on almost any old pc.

DVDShrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/) - It's an oldie but goody, assists in *ahem* archiving DVD's to single layer DVDr's.

Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) I've been using this as my bittorrent client. Works a charm.

CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) This, I've been using to burn video onto dvd's, so as to stick them in my dvd player and watch them on my 70" tv. (had to get that in. 70) simple to use.

This (http://www.sony.ie/view/ShowProduct.action?product=KDS-70R2000&site=odw_en_IE&pageType=Overview&category=TVP+Rear+Projection+TV) Not to harp on about it but. 70

Another one to add to the list, AdBlock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10).
It's an add-on for Firefox which lets you filter out adverts from webpages.
Well worth the install in my ohh so humble opinion.

Here's one I came across today which may be of interest to those of you who wish to archive your DVD's and may have issues with *ahem* scrached DVD's causing corrupt Vobs etc.

Here's a few more app's which have recently crossed my path which might prove useful to some of you.

TweakUAC (http://www.tweak-uac.com/)
First off the most useful in my book, this utility allows you to run the UAC in quiet mode.
The advantage of this over turning it off is ie7 gets to keep it additional security features.
Rocket Doc (http://rocketdock.com/)
A nice OS X like dock-bar, its pretty good once you get used to it.
ReNamer (http://www.den4b.com/projects.php)
Very useful for doing mass renaming of files, such as ohh I don't know mp3's or video files you cousins have given you but inadvertently left their name stamped on.
